Preparing Your Property

For Local Moves:

Change of Address:  Your local post office will have a change of address form. Fill out the form and return it to the post office. Mail change of address cards to companies with whom you have charge accounts and credit cards, and to any services or publications you subscribe to. Be sure to notify your insurance providers. Send change of address cards to friends and relatives too, of course.

Utilities:  Including gas, electric, water and phone. For gas and electric service, cancel service at the address you're moving from effective of the day of closing/possession. Get refund of any deposit made. If applicable, arrange for service at new address.

Other Services: Such as trash collection, milk delivery, cable TV or lawn services. Cancel service at your old address. If applicable, arrange for services at your new address.

And Don't Forget To:

  • Check with your Moving Counselor regarding insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment.
  • Have appliances serviced to make them safely transportable, if necessary.
  • Have household rugs and clothing cleaned before moving, then transport them already wrapped.
  • Plan food usage to minimize the amount you have to dispose of or move with you.

  • If you are moving with infants and/or pets, remember that they have special needs and make necessary arrangements.

On Moving Day:

  • Carry currency, jewelry, important documents yourself.
  • Double check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty.
  • If you%ve sold your home and are leaving certain appliances for the new owner, it's a nice gesture to also leave the appliance manuals.
  • Leave all old keys needed by new owner or tenant with Realtor or rental agent.
